LCD Vs DLP Projectors

Posted by jojodee | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 01-03-2010

If you’ve been thinking about buying a home theater projector, perhaps to connect to an HDTV tuner, and have read reviews or done a little bit of research, you’ll be aware that there are two technologies competing for the contents of your wallet.

Both LCD and DLP are used in projectors suitable for home theaters, but they work in quite different ways and produce slightly different results. If you ask around ‘ particularly in electronics stores, you’re likely to be provided with a mass of information that’s confusing and often just plain wrong. So here, in an effort to clear the fog surrounding projectors, is our guide to LCD v DLP.

LCD

LCD projectors have three separate LCD panels, one for red, one for green, and one for blue components of the image being processed by the projector. As light passess through the LCD panels, individual pixels (or picture elements) can be either opened or closed to either allow light to pass through or be filtered out. In this way the light is modulated and an image projected on to the screen.

LCD projectors have historically had three main advantages over DLP. They produce more accurate colors (due to the three separate LCD panels), they produce a slightly sharper image (although this is as good as undetectable when watching movies) and they are more light-efficient, which means they produce brighter images using less power.

However, LCD projectors also have some disadvantages, although as the technology improves these are becoming less and less relevant. The first of these is pixelation, or what’s known as the screen door effect. This means that sometimes you can see the individual pixels and it looks as though you are viewing the image through a ’screendoor.’ The second historic disadvantage of LCD v DLP is that LCD doesn’t produce absolute black, which means that contrast is less than you would get with DLP.

However, the advent of higher resoltion LCD projectors (particularly ‘HD-ready’ projectors which have a horizontal resolution of 768 pixels or greater) means that pixelation is less of a problem than it used to be. And the improved ability of LCDs to produce high-contrast images is also allowing them to be taken more seriously by home theater enthusiasts.

DLP

Digital Light Processing (DLP) is a technology developed by Texas Instruments and it works by projecting light from the projector’s lamp onto a DLP chip, made up of thousands of tiny mirrors. Each mirror represents a single pixel and directs the light projected onto it either into the lens path to turn the pixel on or away from it to turn it off. Most DLP projectors have only one chip, so in order to reproduce color, a color wheel consisting of red, green, blue and sometimes, white filters is used. The wheel spins between the lamp and the chip and changes the color of the light hitting the chip from red, to green, blue. Each mirror on the DLP chip tilts towards or away from the lens path depending on how much of a particular colour light is required for that pixel at any given instant.

The key advantages DLP has in the LCD v DLP debate is that DLP projectors tend to be smaller and lighter, have better contrast, and don’t suffer the same pixelation problems as LCD projectors. There is one problem that some users report with DLP projectors, although it appears to only affect a very small number of people. Because of the way DLP works, at any given instant, the image on screen is either red, green, or blue. However, the images change so quickly, that the human eye doesn’t detect this and your brain puts the red, green and blue images together to make a complete frame of video. Unfortunately, some people can see the individual colours, and others can detect them enough to cause eye-strain and headaches. However, technology has improved significantly with the introduction of six-color wheels and faster rotation speeds. The rainbow effect should be a problem for even fewer people. The best way to find out if you’re affected is to try out a DLP projector, perhaps by hiring one, before you buy.

Technology in both LCD and DLP projectors is improving all the time. However, at the time of writing DLP still has a slight edge in the home theater market.

Sony Bravia S-Series KDL-40S4100 40-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Review

This is my first ever HDTV so I can’t compare it to others, but I am consistently blown away by the image quality when watching BluRay movies and playing PS3, and can’t imagine how it could be much better.

However, I live in a small apartment and bought a pair of headphones for my wife so she could watch her girly TV series in private, … until I realized that there is nowhere to plug in external headphones. It has RCA-out for an amplifier, but no headphones? Come on, even a black & white telly has that!!

While on the subject of sound: when watching BluRay, the difference between soft and loud volume is so great that I constantly find myself increasing and decreasing the volume. This TV could really have benefited from a Night Mode, and sadly the PS3 does not seem to have one either.

Samsung 34 CRT HDTV Reviews

Posted by jojodee | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 25-02-2010

One of the largest manufacturers that makes HDTV’s is Samsung, and while most people seem to like a Samsung 34 CRT HDTV, they actually don’t make one at 34 inches, but they do make lots of others that are around the same size.

The major advantage of getting a CRT HDTV is that they are much, much cheaper than a plasma or LCD set. CRT stands for cathode ray tube, or as most people know them, an original style boxy TV. While the cathode ray tube has been seriously reduced in size in many of these sets, it’s still not as flat as a plasma or LCD set would be.

Samsung markets their CRT-style HDTV’s under the product line name SlimFit. An example is the Samsung TX-R3080WH 30″ Wide SlimFit HDTV, a 30-inch HDTV. While not super-thin like its plasma and LCD family members, it still provides a HDTV quality picture. The set is also very affordable compared to other sets the same size. Most retailers are selling it for between $600-$700 dollars. This set comes with an aspect ratio of 16:9, and is only 16 inches deep, making it much slimmer than an old fashioned, clunky TV set. It can be used in a spot where you don’t have a lot of room to store your TV.

The Samsung TXN3271HF 32″ DynaFlat Digital HD-Ready TV is probably the closest thing Samsung sells to a 34 CRT HDTV. This set isn’t quite as thin as the above model, and retails for around $800.00. It comes with a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 3-line digital comb filter. The reviews listed for this set are somewhat poor, but it is unknown if the people listing the review just didn’t understand the technology they were dealing with. Also, since the shipping weight of this set is over 150 pounds, it may not be able to be shipped to Hawaii, Alaska or Internationally. Keep this in mind if you plan to buy one of these sets over the Internet.

The Samsung 34 CRT HDTV may not be a reality, but Samsung does make many other affordable CRT HDTV’s that you can buy. Shop around, read the reviews and you’ll make an informed purchase.

Great Price Sony KDF60XS955 for

Sony KDF-60XS955 60-Inch HD-Ready LCD Projection Television Review

I started looking for a big screen TV in 2004, but they were so expensive. In 2005 while buying DVD’s I wanted to stroll thru the TV’s and see the new technology. That’s when I came across Sony’s art work. Stylish frame with the side speakers was impressive. A matte front panel to protect the screen and reduce glare (not many with this feature), good for little kids that have to touch everything! It’s more affordable with the combination of projection with the sharp picture of an HD LCD. If your kids play a lot of video games (me sometimes) you don’t have to worry about screen burn. HDMI connections with more than enough video ports to hook up everything – HD satellite box, receiver/amplifier, DVD, VCR, Xbox, Wii, Play Station 3. Plus Memory stick compatible to really show off the family pictures (so your old parents can see them)! ;^) As far as HD action goes – I watch Discovery HD, HD sports, HD movies action and Sci Fi with no problems. Once you go HD it’s difficult to watch standard definition. Put it this way, after looking at it on the sales room floor and finding out about it’s features I looked at my wife to discuss finances when she said “Go ahead and get it, I love it.”. Sold!
Writing this in June 2008 with over 8300+ hrs on the lamp timer and just replaced the lamp. I found one online for 0 and how to reset the timer myself. It’s an easy change out. I’m as happy with this, correction, Sony’s KDF-60XS955 60 inch HD LCD Projection TV now as when I first bought it. I would rather spend a little more for a quality product and be happy than go cheap and end up cussing every time something went wrong.

Sony KDF-60XS955 60-Inch HD-Ready LCD Projection Television Overview

Experience unsurpassed television entertainment with Sony’s KDF-60XS955 Grand WEGA LCD Projection Television. Its innovative low profile design is sure to compliment any decor. You can even view your photos and listen to MP3 audio with the built-in Enhanced Memory Stick Media slot.

Sony KDF-60XS955 60-Inch HD-Ready LCD Projection Television Specifications

Huge screen. Brilliant, lifelike image. Explosive sound. Yes, it’s Sony’s 60-inch KDF-60XS955 rear-projection LCD television, which is equipped to deliver standard and full-fledged HDTV reception right out of the box with its integrated NTSC and ATSC (HDTV) tuners. It also offers digital cable readiness with a CableCARD slot and the latest digital-video interface, HDMI. Weighing a mere 113 pounds and standing under 21 inches deep, the set also offers maximum image with minimal space investment.

The set’s 1,366 x 788 liquid-crystal display frees you from having to make convergence adjustments or having to worry about image burn-in. Instead you get incredible detail (more than 3 million pixels), high contrast, and even, corner-to-corner brightness from the set’s user-replaceable 132-watt UHP (ultra high pressure) lamp.

The screen features a wide, 16:9 aspect ratio to match the dimension of most movies and HDTV broadcasts, and the KDF-60XS955 offers compatibility with standard-definition 480i, enhanced-definition 480p, and high-definition 720p and 1080i signals.

Sony’s CineMotion 3:2 pulldown detection and reversal is a handy feature for watching progressive-scan movie programs in their native 24-frame format. Digital video mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

The set’s WEGA Engine system maximizes picture performance from any video source by minimizing the number of digital-to-analog conversion processes. This full digital processing engine includes Sony’s MID-X (Multi Image Driver), which maintains the integrity of a converted signal by minimizing image loss in the scaling process; and a proprietary optical engine, which employs a trio of Sony’s wide-XGA, high-resolution LCD panels, 1 for each of the RGB signals (resulting in a total of 3.28 million dots of resolution).

The optical engine also features a special 11-element lens system responsible for the lightweight, ultra-slim cabinet. The lens system bends the light path, creating an ultra-short focal point while maintaining high brightness. This proprietary system delivers vivid images from the center of the screen all the way to the edges.

This XS Series Grand WEGA television offers advanced menu functions that are typically found only in service menus: gamma correction (bright and dark balancing), black correction (enhances contrast), white balance (fine-tunes white intensity), detail enhancement (sharpens the picture), and clear white (emphasizes whites).

The set includes numerous other features.

  • TwinView PIP (picture-in-picture) lets you view any 2 sources simultaneously, even at different image resolutions, while the built-in Memory Stick media slot offers ready display of both JPEG images and MPEG-1 video.
  • A Memory Stick media slot (compatible with Memory Stick Pro and Memory Stick Duo media) grants convenient viewing of JPEG and MPEG-1 files. It can also display customized slide shows using MP3 files for background music.
  • Authorized CableCARD ability means the set will receive digital cable television systems services directly from the cable operator without requiring a bulky, external cable box.
  • Live Color is an innovative circuit that emphasizes blues and greens without affecting reds for a more natural, vivid picture. Choose from 3 enhancement levels (high, medium, low) or “off.”
  • Sony’s exclusive S-Master 1-bit digital amplifier produces 5 watts per channel (x 2), pumping an additional 20 watts into a built-in subwoofer for rich, full-bodied sound from movies and music.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link the set with any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver).

The TV had a great picture, but what really surprised me was the quality of sound it produces. I have a big surround sound, but even without it, the tv sounds great. It was definately worth the money at the time (Jan 05), but by now there may be better deals.

Pink Electronics – There is a pink (almost) everything – Part 2

Posted by jojodee | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 20-02-2010

In my previous article) Pink Electronics – There's a pink (almost everything – part I, I talked about pink mice, speakers and headphones that matches your pink laptop. Today I share my insights even more pink peripherals for your office parties (or away).

Desktop Computer
Faced with a growing number of laptop computers rose available, I am surprised that the prey for desktop computers rose are small, to say the least. I couldlooking for a single desktop tower available in pink! Raidmax computer cases are pink in two different versions, and you can buy a custom-built computers inside one of these cases KidComputers, but the game is done.

Keyboards
There are a number of keyboards rose, even there, but I found a couple: Saitek Keyboard is a pink with white buttons (and a matching mouse), is the "Hello Kitty Multimedia Keyboard with built-in (removable) support for the wrist pink checkered(are various other types of keyboards are available as Hello Kitty, but I thought it would be sufficient here), and my absolute favorite, the ultra cool, hot pink, flexible Bendi Board of Desklamations. There is absolutely flexible silicone has been made out (you can roll up and put it in your pocket, if you want to go), and if in your drink or coffee while you're about to knock No problem – you can always just wipe with a damp cloth. Perfect!

For younger children,The size of the small baby princess pink keyboard, pink, purple and red keys (and a mini-matching) of the mouse, and a layout that prevents repetitive strain injury! I really hope that children do not spend their time behind a computer at risk of being so. There is plenty of time to develop these things, if you have a problem arises.

USB Hub
GE has created a truly "smart" (hot pink) in 4-port hub as a cube. The Smart is that 2 of them shoot like that,If you have taken large, will still be able to use the same hub for all connections. Saitek Mini UFO Hub is a round, pink hard drive with 4-door, while small rodents hub rose is in the form of (surprise!) A mouse and is really kind of cute. The Animated Hello Kitty Kitty USB hub has a conversation with you (in Japanese or English, to play your choice), e-mail to their friends and puzzles, while you tap away.

Flash Drives
There are many waysin pink, when it comes to flash drives. Tiny as they are, it adds a lot of style to your setup. SanDisk 2GB Cruzer Gator Alligator in the dark, lovely eyes, and its 4GB Cruzer Fleur is white with pink flowers and a pink cover. Units are Tribeca's Splash Fuschia with butterflies, and even if they are not as great as others I have mentioned here, Kingston DataTraveler 101 (Pink, of course), with its accompanying cover (moves to the side when you drive)is ideal for people like me who tend to lose small pieces … ATP Petito Pink Special Edition flash drive into light, and bright pink with a pink ribbon is not just pretty, she supports research on breast cancer, 10% of the money goes to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

Cables
KaBling Cables Unlimited High-Speed USB 2.0 Mini B 5 pin cable are adorable in Fuchsia with crystals at each end. The company also provides a bright pink Universal AC Power Cord, Cat5e patch cable, aCable HDMI 1.3 home theater, stereo audio cable (all pink with crystals of course). And you can be comfortable with the addition of these pieces of bling to your home – Cables Unlimited, the sponsor of the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

If bling is not your thing (yes, that was on purpose), Belkin is a CAT-5e patch cable in pink and GE sells a set with three pink cable (USB 2.0, a Cat-5e and a mini-USB).

As you can see, there are many pink gadgets out there. If youSearching for a specific item and can not find in pink – keep your eyes open. I think we will see even more electronics in every color imaginable in the future.
